Smithson Plaza

Smithson Plaza is a three-building, 81,500-square-foot mixed-use campus located within the core of the St. James’s submarket in London’s famed West End. The property was originally commissioned as the headquarters for The Economist and stands today as an iconic example of 1960s modernist architecture.

Designed by internationally-renowned architects Alison and Peter Smithsons and completed in 1964, Smithson Plaza comprises a 14-story, 56,700-square-foot office tower, a seven-story, 3,800-square-foot residential building and almost 8,000 square feet of retail, gallery and restaurant space. Renovated in 1988 by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the minimal structural design of the buildings evokes a high modernist aesthetic, providing excellent natural light due to their center core construction. As the tallest office building in St. James’s, Smithson Plaza tower provides far-reaching views across central London, as well as a double-height lobby, bicycle storage with shower facilities and below-grade parking.

The St. James’s submarket is characterized by major corporate and professional occupiers, largely drawn to the area for its unrivalled amenities, prestigious hotels and luxury shopping. Many of the world’s most exclusive private members’ clubs, renowned restaurants and key London landmarks are also concentrated in the area, including Buckingham Palace, The National Gallery, Houses of Parliament and the Royal Parks. Smithson Plaza sits at the heart of this dynamic and desirable area, with easy accessibility by the Green Park and Piccadilly Circus underground stations a few minutes’ walk away.
